Cambridge Chronicle 4 Aug 1838: Thomas and Susan Saunders guilty of assault on Thomas Winnell

Thomas Saunders, and Susan Saunders, were indicted for an assault upon Thomas Winnell, the pindar of the parish of Trumpington. It appeared that the prosecutor had impounded an ass, belonging to the defendant, which he found grazing by the side of the turnpike-road, upon which the female prisoner went to a public-house where the prosecutor was, and asked for her husband’s donkey; prosecutor said that she should have it if she paid him 4d. — her husband came up at this time, and according to the evidence of one of the witnesses, they both “wrapped on” to him — Saunders in his defence said, that the prosecutor told him that if he would give him a pot or two of beer now and then he would only meddle with the donkey when he saw some farmers on the road. This statement, however, the prosecutor, upon being called, denied. — Guilty — ten days’ imprisonment.
