Cambridge Chronicle 11 Nov 1843: William Wilson guilty of assault

ASSAULT AND ROBBERY ON TRUMPINGTON ROAD. — Yesterday morning, William Wilson, of Trumpington, was brought before the Mayor. (R. M. Fawcett Esq.,) J. Skrine, Esq., and Capt. Drake, charged with assaulting S. T. Lyon, Esq., of Trinity College; and also stealing his cap. It appeared that the prosecutor, accompanied by a friend, was walking between 5 and 6 o’clock on Tuesday evening last, on the Trumpington town road, beside the water course, when the prisoner overtook them and insisted upon keeping by the side of them, asking them if they would have it rough or smooth. When near the bridge, he called out to some one else, and on Mr. Lyon looking round to see if any one was coming, the prisoner struck him two violent blows one under each ear, which knocked him down, his cap fell off, the prisoner picked up the cap, and ran away. The cry of stop thief was raised, and two other persons joining in the chase the prisoner was run down in a field near Mr. Brewer’s house. — In his defence he said he was drunk, and having lost his own cap, he thought when picking up Mr. Lyon’s he had found it again. — Fined 10s, & 14s. costs, or three weeks imprisonment. - sent to gaol.
