Cambridge Independent Press 5 Jul 1862: Nathaniel Haggis witness to theft

Edward Rooke was charged with stealing a bottle of naion, from the tap-room of the Wheatsheaf, Silver-street, — Nathaniel Haggis, of Trumpington, gardener, said he was in Marshall’s on Thursday afternoon, about 20 minutes to two; saw the prisoner come in; he seemed to be quite sober. Witness left the room to ascertain the time, leaving the door open; and when he went back he saw the prisoner, with one foot on the form, in the act of taking the bottle off the shelf; prisoner put it into his pocket. Neal took the bottle from prisoner’s pocket, and put it on the shelf. Witness then went to look for Mr. Marshall. — One month’s hard labour.
