Cambridge Independent Press 12 Dec 1868: William Lloyd charged with stealing tools

THEFT. — William Lloyd, of Ely, was charged with stealing a shovel, the property of John Brown, and a pickaxe, value 3s. 6d., the property of Henry Carter, from the coprolite pits at Trumpington, on the 27th November. Complainant reported their loss to p.c. Longstaff, who found the tools sold at Rayment’s marine store shop in Barnwell, having been sold there by the prisoner the day after they were stolen. Prisoner, who formerly resided at Trumpington, was traced to Ely on the 30th, and, on being apprehended by the p.c. before named admitted the theft. There being a previous conviction for felony, the Bench declined to adjudicate summarily, and prisoner was sent for trial to next assizes.
