Edinburgh Evening News 29 Apr 1874: Trumpington farm wages increased

THREATENING TO ROAST A BISHOP.

The demonstration of labourers at Newmarket yesterday was unsuccessful, and though a few men have gone in at Snailwell, the rest are confidence of success. The farmers’ meeting yesterday was numerously attended. The Rev. Mr. Josling, Rector of Moulton, threatened to roast the Bishop of Manchester, and recommended him to increase his curates’ income. Mr. Taylor, general secretary of the National Labourers’ Union, sent a letter to the chairman during the meeting, asking to be allowed an interview, but the secretary was sent to him with a message that anything he wishes to say must be put in writing. Mr. S. Morley, the Bishop of Manchester, and M. Bullock Hall were severally condemned. The farmers at Trumpington, near Cambridge, have raised the wages of their labourers without being asked.
