Cambridge Daily News 7 Sep 1889: Frank Ely guilty of assault

ASSAULT. — At the Cambridge Divisional Court this afternoon (before Messrs. I.H. Wilkinson, H. W. Hurrell, C. E. Ivatt, and the Rev. H. Latham), Frank Ely, plasterer, of Trumpington, was charged with having on the 4th inst. assaulted R. D. Petit, carpenter, of Argyle-street, Cambridge. — Defendant pleaded guilty under provocation. — Complainant said he was at work at Cavendish College between three and four p.m. on the 4th of September. Defendant was also at work there. They were engaged in repairing the floor. Defendant went away, and on coming back he was talking loudly and swearing. Defendant said, “What’s up.” Defendant said, “I will soon show you,” and hit him a severe blow on the head, which knocked him on his hand. He got up again, and defendant said, “I will knock your head off,” and struck him a blow in the body. Complainant ran away, and defendant ran after him, and punched him in the back. — Alfred Walker, of 28, Gold-street, gave corroborative evidence. — Defendant said he had been insulted so much by the complainant that he could not stand it any longer. — He was fined 10s., and 13s. 6d.
