Cambridge Chronicle 24 May 1895: Schools examinations
TRUMPINGTON. – NATIONAL SCHOOLS.- The various examinations of the schools have been held and the reports are as follows:- Drawing Examination (March 9th), School reported “Good.” Government Examination (April 27), Mixed School – “Taking into consideration the difficulties which have arisen during the year in connection with the school staff, the results are very satisfactory and the higher grants may be continued for all subjects. Tone and discipline are very good.” Infants’ School – “The Infants continue to be thoroughly well taught and disciplined. Arithmetic and Spelling deserve special praise.” Grant for Mixed School, £71 19s. : Infants, £44 11s. Diocesan Inspection (May 15th, by the Rev. Lawrence Fisher), Upper School – Written Work – Out of 64 papers, 60 were classed as “Good.” 4 as “Fair.” Viva Voce – Division I. – “The children acquitted themselves with credit in all their subjects. The Baptismal Service was not as strongly known as the rest but this was unavoidable.” Division II. – “Answers on the Bible outlines were well given. So also in the Catechism except for a few inaccuracies in repeating the text. Church Seasons, fair, Repetitions, Prayers well said. Infants’ School – Division I. – “The children in this room passed an excellent examination in all their work.” – Division II. – “These children know their Bible pictures well, and they said their repetition nicely together, but only one said the hymn thoroughly. Their over eagerness to answer (though a fault on the right side) might be restrained with advantage.”The schools on the whole did very well throughout. A more reverent demeanour might be attained in the case of some children. Singing was good. The schools are classed as ‘Very Good.’
