Herts and Cambs Reporter 16 Dec 1898: Duke prize sow and Towler hog sold
Christmas Fat Stock Sales
The entries for the fat stock sales on Monday were heavy and there was a good competition for the prices offered by the various auctioneers.
To Messrs. Chalk fell the honour of penning the two prize winning beasts, the successful consignee being Mr. Hamer Towgood, of Shelford. He secured the first prize with a prime black ox, which was bought by Mr. Malyon, of Shelford, for £26 5s., and the second prize was a grand red animal which was purchased by Mr. Forsdyke, of Linton, for £28. A very choice lot of sheep were penned, and the trade was very brisk, every lot finding a purchaser. Mr C.W. Adeane’s pen of Southdown hoggets obtained the prize for the best pen of four fat sheep or hoggets without restriction as to age or feeding, and on being sold, made 60s 5d. each.

Hoy (Royston.) The first prize for best sow was gained by Mr. G. Duke (Trumpington) which sold for £7 2s 6d. Mr. A. Towler sent a hog which sold for £7, and good sows were sent by Mr. Read (Wimpole).
