Cambridge Daily News 9 May 1913: Speeding undergraduate
An undergraduate motorist was charged with driving to the danger of the public. Supt Webb was cycling along Harston Road, Trumpington when he saw a motor car driven more furiously than he had ever seen before. The speed would be at the very least forty miles an hour. It created a great deal of dust and it was impossible to see who was driving, but he took the number. When tracked down the defendant said “I don’t like these summonses, Robert. They take such a lot of money to meet. If they fine me, I shall make the other three chaps who were with me help to pay for the fine”. He then asked “Robert” to have a drink, which he refused. The lad had two previous convictions and was fined £10 13 05
