Of Middlesex. [Youngest] s. of William Jones, surgeon. B. July 13, 1836, in London. School, City of London. Matric. Michs. 1854. As a result of failing sight, he left Cambridge, and lived in Canada, 1857-60. Worked on the Prince Consort's model farm near Windsor in 1861; after operations, his sight improved and he returned to St John's, Cambridge, 1865. Migrated to Corpus Christi, Apr. 25, 1865; exhibitioner; Mawson Scholar, 1866; B.A. (9th Classic) 1869; M.A. 1872. Fellow of Corpus Christi, Apr. 21, 1869; Librarian, 1870-91. Ord. deacon (Ely) 1872; priest, 1873. Secretary of the Church Patronage Society, 1872-9. Latin Lecturer to the Association for Higher Education of Women, 1875-7. Travelled widely, collecting coins, gems and seals from all over Europe to form a museum in his College rooms. F.S.A., 1872. Hon. Secretary, Cambridge Antiquarian Society. Married, Dec. 12, 1887, Agnes Smith, writer and Greek scholar (afterwards discoverer of the Sinai Palimpsest).
