BREWER, Eugenia Mershon-- passed on peacefully after a brief illness on April 1, 2002 in Oakland, CA at the age of 86. She was the beloved wife of the late James Downey Brewer Sr., and daughter of the late James Austin and Laura Thompson Mershon of Gainesville. Eugenia was born Sept. 1915 in Gainesville, GA where she graduated from Brenau College.
After marrying in Gainseville she and Jim began a life in the US Army and served around the Eastern United States, Great Britain and Germany. After settling in California in 1954, she worked for various local newspapers in retail and advertising sales before retiring from the San Jose Mercury News in 1979.
After retirement she was able to enjoy her interests of painting and traveling abroad with good friends. One of her favorite journeys was to attend her 50th college reunion at Brenau with her sons Stephen and David. She spent her last years enjoying visits from her sons and her grandchildren of whom she was so proud.
She is survived by her sons, James of Vashon Island, WA, Joel of Seattle, WA, Stephen of Oakland, CA, David and his family of San Jose, CA, Michael and his family of Clinton, Iowa and her dearest sister Laura Watson and her family of Arlington, VA.
Services will be held at Darling-Fischer Chapel of the Hills, 615 N. Santa Cruz Ave. Los Gatos on Saturday, April 6, 2002 at 3:00 PM (408) 354-7740.
