At the Battersea Training College, we are glad to find that three of the students from this district were successful in obtaining these prizes. We subjoin their names, with the schools at which they were pupil teachers: - William Barnard, East road National school; William Brooks, St. Paul’s National School; John Constable, Trumpington National School.
Cambridge Independent Press 6 Mar 1858:
Drawing Certificates. We are glad to learn from the result of the examination held at Battersea Training College, last Christmas, by her Majesty’s Inspector of Schools, that Mr John Constable, and Mr Leonard Leader, have gained certificates of full competency to teach drawing, with the honour of C.M.D. attached to their names in the Government Books, and also have been awarded with prizes for their efficiency in this art. They were both pupil teachers in this district, the former at Trumpington, now master of a school in Cheshire, and the latter at East-road, now master of a school in Lincolnshire. In order to gain these certificates there are five papers to work, viz., Free-hand Geometry, Perspective, Model and Memory Drawing, and if they prove satisfactory to the officials at the Science and Art Department, Kensington, the students receive the honours and benefits awarded by the Committee of the Council on Education, for proficiency in this new and important branch of instruction.
