TRUMPINGTON.- A Remarkable Sheep. - In discussing the aphorisms of the British public, it may be observed that its masterly deductions are not always the result of palpable justice or positive reason, and hence it follows that there are no rules without exceptions. A dog bears the reputation of being very sagacious, but instances are not wanting where his instinct would often disgrace the brains of a less erudite animal. Again: "Stupid as a gander" is a common expression, but it will be recollected that the cackle of a goose once baffled the tactics of Brennus, and saved Rome from destruction. "Silly as a sheep" is another piece of patent profundity, and this brings us to our subject. Mr. Isaac Bryant, of Trumpington, has in his possession a fine sheep, and if any of our readers will pay a visit to Mine Host of the Unicorn, they will have every reason to be pleased with the company of the creature he possesses. The sheep is a pet of the juveniles of the village; he has no objection to take part in their sports; he is always ready for fun; and if any little misunderstanding should arise in the game, he is the first to "make it up" and begin afresh; and, remarkable as it may appear, he has good social qualifications. He will accept an invitation to the parlour, and take a glass of ale with becoming gravity; and his address would never disturb the equanimity of Lord Chesterfield. Brandy-and-water our friend is fond of, in fact, he will drink any liquor that may be offered; and though not a confirmed toper, he has paid the penalty of his indiscretion. A paint-pot standing in his way, he partook of the contents, and the result was a serious indisposition; but at the present time he is perfectly convalescent. Smoking cigars and carrying a snuff-box are not his accomplishments, but he will chew a piece of tobacco with apparent relish, and empty a pouch in less time than poor Tom Bowling. Long life to our woolly friend. May his introduction to the butcher be far distant. May he never know the knife.

TRUMPINGTON. - Club Feast. - On Tuesday last the members of the Benefit Society, which is held at the School, in this place, celebrated their anniversary by a dinner, which consisted of thoroughly good English fare, and was placed upon the tables with a profusion and an excellence which reflected great credit upon Mr. Bryant, the worthy landlord of the Unicorn. The dinner was held in Snow's ample tent. About 150 sat down to it: the esteemed Rector (the Rev. Professor Grote) presided. The Rev. Mr. Kirkby, the curate, was also present, and evinces great interest in the prosperity of the club. The proceedings passed off in a manner highly satisfactory. C. F. Foster and a party of ladies honoured the company with their presence. The Trumpington band, under the leadership of Mr J. Large, was in attendance, and greatly added to the interest of the proceedings.

Cambridge Chronicle 25 Jul 1868:
TRUMPINGTON. - On Wednesday evening, a friendly match at four corners came off at Trumpington, between the villages of Grantchester and Trumpington, which ended by the Trumpington heroes winning easily. A first rate supper was provided by the worthy host and hostess (Mr. and Mrs. Bryant), in their usual style, which gave great satisfaction. The return match will be played at Grantchester.
