Notes for: Peter Mackie
An item published in Cambridge Daily News. Thursday 24 October 1918, p.8, under the heading ‘Local Casualties’ and the subheading ‘Trumpington’:- "Corpl. P. B. Mackie " We regret to report the death of P. B. Mackie, Corporal of Horse, 2nd Life Guards, which occurred on Monday last at the 1st Eastern General Hospital, following an attack of pneumonia. Corpl. Mackie was a familiar figure in Trumpington, quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, and was greatly liked by all who knew him. Being one of the "Old Contemptibles" in the Life Guards, he took part in the retreat from Mons, acting as orderly to the medical officer of the squadron. He is one of the few of Capt. Pemberton’s men, who survived the attack on Roulers, where that gallant officer met his death. Being near the spot at the time, he was able to convey to Canon and Mrs Pemberton particulars of the events which led to the death of their son, and Corpl. Mackie had since been a frequent and welcome visitor at Trumpington Hall. Whilst discharging his duty in attending to a wounded officer whose horse was standing by, a shell exploded, killing the officer and horse, the latter falling on Corpl. Mackie and severely injuring him. On becoming convalescent, he was received at Trumpington Hall, where he remained for eight weeks. On his return to Windsor, the Headquarters of the Guards, he was in attendance to the M.O. in the Military Hospital for about a year, after which he again saw active service in France as a member of the Household Battalion. The effects of his previous injuries again manifested themselves, in addition to which he contracted trench fever and organic trouble, which necessitated his return to England. On recovering, he was attached to the staff of the Cadet Battalion at Jesus College, which position he occupied until his death. The corpse is to be conveyed to his home at Largs, near Glasgow, and it is understood a party of N. C. O.s of the 2nd Life Guards from Windsor, together with members of the staff from Jesus College, will attend the funeral, which takes place on Friday, the 25th, with military honours, at Largs
