Trip., 1st Class) 1835; M.A. 1838; B.D. 1855. Fellow, 1837-66. Succeeded Whewell as Knightbridge Professor of Moral Philosophy, 1855-66. Ord. deacon (Ely) 1842; priest, Apr. 14, 1844. P.C. of Wareside, Herts., 1847. V. of Trumpington, Cambs., 1847-66. Unsuccessful candidate for Chair of Modern History, 1849. Contributed to Cambridge Essays, 1856. Published his Exploratio Philosophica, 1865. His Examination of Utilitarian Philosophy and his Treatise on Moral Ideals were published posthumously by his literary executor. Cambridge Independent Press 11 Sep 1847:
Jenny Lind. - It has for some time been currently reported that this amiable lady was about to bestow her hand upon the Rev. Mr. Grote, with whose family, says a London paper, she passes much of her time, at Burnham Beeches, near Slough. Mr. Grote is a fellow of Trinity College, and was lately presented by that society to the living of Trumpington, near Cambridge.

In 1856 bought "Piggotts" (no. 62 on Inclosure Award map) from John Nightingale. Some time between 1853 and 1866 bought property immediately east of Piggotts (no. 61) from Richard Miller. Left them both to his niece Alexandrina Mayor in 1866
