New Allotments granted in the Trumpington Inclosure Award

Notes:

c)  These descriptions (with the exception of the locations in brackets [ ] ) come directly from the Inclosure Award itself, with some minor editing.

d)  “hedges etc” is an abbreviated form of “the hedges ditches mounds and fences”, which unless otherwise stated should be maintained by the owners.

1. To F. C. J. Pemberton: in lieu of and as a compensation for his right and interest in and to the soil of the waste grounds within the parish one parcel of land 25a 3r 15p [east side of southern end of Shelford Road]

2. To the Master and Fellows of Trinity College as Impropriators of the Rectory and F. C. J. Pemberton their lessee: as a full compensation for the Glebe Land and right of Common two pieces of land.  One 30a 1r 38p [corner of New Road and Hills Road, to the south].  This bounded on the south by the land hereinafter sold to Peete Musgrave marked Lot 2 and William Lyon marked Lots 3 and 4, and on the west by an allotment hereinafter awarded to F. C. J. Pemberton which is set out subject to a private Road over the same on the south side thereof of the breadth of 25 feet from Hills Road to an allotment to F. C. J. Pemberton containing 35p and which said private road is set out and as for an occupation Carriage and Drift Road for the use of the  cattle owners and occupiers for the time being of the respective allotments thereto adjoining; hedges etc 33c 8l having been made at the expence of the other Proprietors and also supported and scoured out by them for 7 years commencing on 25 Dec 1801 shall for ever hereafter be maintained supported and scoured out by and at the expense of the Master and Fellows and their Lessee. 

3. The other piece 14a 2r 11p [same corner, to the north]; hedges etc 29c 70l having been made at the expence of the other Proprietors and also supported and scoured out by them for 7 years commencing on 25 Dec 1801 shall for ever hereafter be maintained supported and scoured out by and at the expense of the Master and Fellows and their Lessee. 

4. To the Reverend Thomas Heckford and his successors Vicars of Trumpington for the Glebe Land and right of Common belonging to the said Vicarage: one piece of land 3a 8p [SW of Shelford Road/Hauxton Road junction].  Hedges etc 11c 75l having been made at the expence of the other Proprietors and also supported and scoured out by them for 7 years commencing on 25 Dec 1801 shall for ever hereafter be maintained supported and scoured out by and at the expense of Thomas Heckford and his successors.

5. To the Master and Fellows of Trinity College as Impropriators and F. C. J. Pemberton their lessee: two pieces of land as follows.  First 268a 1r 26p [north of New Road between Cambridge Road and Hills Road], hedges etc 235c 35l.  Also 32a 3r 22p [almost in SE corner of parish], hedges etc 57c 30l.

6. To Thomas Heckford and his successors Vicars: 5a 26p [in very SE corner of parish – total with preceding 38a 8p], hedges etc 19c 10l.  Commissioners have sold last two allotments on 9/10 May 1803 to William Lyon of Cambridge, Grocer and to Peete Musgrave of Cambridge, Woollen Draper, for £1500, and have applied the same in defraying the expenses relating to the sale and in erecting Barns Outhouses and other Buildings upon the allotments awarded to the Impropriators and Vicar and in making and raising such interior subdivision fences on those allotments as they have judged necessary and proper for the occupation of the lands therein allotted in lieu of the rectorial and vicarial Tithes.

8. To Reverend Christopher Anstey the eldest son of Christopher Anstey named in the Act having died since the passing thereof: 375a 3r 29p [Anstey Hall Farm], hedges etc 152c 37l.  Subject to making and maintaining of two drains across the land for conveying the water from the Tunnels under the Turnpike Road from the road to the River.

9. To Christopher Anstey 2a 13p [west of Hauxton Road at southern end], hedges etc 11c 30l.  Compensation in respect of rights of Common belonging to a commonable Messuage holden of the Manor of Grantchester cum Coton.

Pemberton).  Marginal addition: And also equal in value to a piece of land called a Twenty foot lying in Willow Meadow and two Roods of open Field land belonging to the said Trustees and which last mentioned land they the said Trustees permitted the Herdsman of the said Parish for the time being to occupy Rent free.  In 1822 as Town Lands (with previous) in occupation of John Nicholls.

35. To the Chancellor and Scholars of the University of Cambridge 3r 29p [north east corner of parish adjoining allotment to Edward Preston], hedges etc 6c 70l.

36. To John Utteridge 1a 1r 22p [near corner of New Road and Trumpington Road on north side], hedges 8c 50l.  In 1822 occupied by John Nightingale.

37. To the Surveyor or Surveyors of the Parish, as and for public stone, gravel, sand and mortar pits: one piece of land or ground near Hauxton Turnpike Gate containing 2r [southern end of Hauxton Road on eastern side]. And one other piece of land or ground containing 2a 2r 16p [southern side of New Road east of Hobson’s Brook].  Which said pieces of land are by us set out, appointed, allotted and awarded as and for public stone, gravel, sand and mortar pits to be used in common by the inhabitants of the said Parish of Trumpington, as well for their private use as for making and repairing the public roads and ways herein by us set out and appointed; hedges etc of which, 1c 60l next to Hauxton Road, and 4c next to New Road, shall be made and for ever maintained by and at the expense of the said F C J Pemberton and the respective owners for the time being of the Allotments thereto adjoining. In consideration whereof, and of his and their making and maintaining proper carriage gates in the said fences for the convenience of all persons intitled to enter into and upon the said pieces of land to dig and carry away stone, gravel, sand and mortar for the purposes aforesaid, the said F C J Pemberton and the respective owners for the time being of the Allotments adjoining thereto shall and may take and enjoy the grass and herbage growing and renewing upon the said two Allotments to and for his and their own use.

FENCING.  The Commissioners direct that the several allotments herein before awarded shall be enclosed (by) hedges ditches and fences at the proper costs and charges of the several persons to whom the same are respectively awarded with ditches and quickset hedges with proper posts rails and other Guard Fences to such quickset hedges which quickset hedges shall be planted upon the allotment of the proprietor who is herein before ordered to make any such Fences at a distance of not less than four feet from the outer boundary of his or her allotment with a proper ditch on the out-side thereof of sufficient width and depth to convey the water from the adjacent allotments that no person shall be compelled to make any such ditch more than four feet and an half wide and three deep and where any ancient drain or watercourse shall run across or along the boundary of any allotment the same shall be cleansed and scoured out sufficiently wide and deep for the purpose of drainage by and at the expence of the respective persons along the boundary of or across whose allotment such drain or watercourse shall run or pass.
