Celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee, 2022
A number of events were held in Trumpington to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee (70th anniversary) of the accession of Queen Elizabeth II to the throne in 1952. These included:
• Wingate Way Jubilee Party, Thursday 2 June 2022.
• Exeter Close Street Party, Friday 3 June 2022.
• Trumpington Jubilee Picnic on King George V Playing Field and Trumpington Pavilion, Sunday 5 June 2022.
• Clay Farm Community Garden, 25 June 2022.
Wingate Way Jubilee Party, Thursday 2 June
About 60 residents from Wingate Way and Wingate Close enjoyed a Jubilee Party on the gloriously sunny afternoon of 2nd June 2022, in the spacious grounds of 23 Wingate Way. Coordinated by a small hardworking committee, residents brought along a wide variety of food and supplied bottomless Pimms and various soft drinks. Families picnicked on the lawn and the swings and balloons provided plenty of fun for the next generation.

Exeter Close Street Party, Friday 3 June 2022
The Exeter Close Street Party consisted of a lunch followed by games and socialising for the duration of the afternoon. With the sun shining, the Street party was enjoyed by residents and friends of Exeter Close, as well as a visit from the Major and Majoress.
Many thanks to those whom helped to organise the event, especially Kirsty Richardson who made the Piñata’s, Val Cameron who made the Platinum Puddings and Sam Cross who made all the punting which so brilliantly filled the Close for the weekend.

Trumpington Jubilee Picnic on King George V Playing Field and Trumpington Pavilion, Sunday 5 June 2022
The Trumpington Residents’ Association organised a community picnic on King George V Playing Field and Trumpington Pavilion on 5 June, with support from Trumpington Stitchers and other local groups. Trumpington Pavilion and the outside area were decorated with bunting produced by the Stitchers and we added to the sense of occasion with banners, table cloths, crowns, flags, etc. Residents brought their own picnics, with additional cakes and tea available from the Pavilion café.
The activities included Cambridge Brass Band, who played throughout the afternoon; a colouring competition for children; a raffle; taster rugby sessions organised by Cambridge Rugby Club; local community groups including Trumpington Stitchers, TRA, Trumpington Local History Group, scouts, Trumpington Kids Clothes Hub, MOPS, Sweaty Mama, Vedanta Wellness Yoga, and demonstrations by the Balkan dance group. We were joined by the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor Mark Ashton and Barbara Ashton. Despite the disappointing weather, there were over 400 participants.
Thanks to Emma Buck for organising the day and to Emma Buck, Jenny Blackhurst, Amanda Nilsson, Philippa Slatter and Joanne Webster for photographs.
Clay Farm Community Garden, 25 June 2022
The Jubilee Garden party at Clay Farm Community Garden was a huge success. The sun shone, there were games and fun for children, while parents, families and friends could relax (a little). Smoke barbecue did a roaring trade as did Beanissimo with their popular coffee and Gentleman Jim’s bar kept the drinks flowing. The Mayor visited and met our team. Children received “party bags” with refreshments and seeds to take home or plant in the garden. The Stitchers loaned their lovely bunting and Wall of Flowers. The Trumpington Residents’ Association came with giant bubbles and crowns and “our Queen” dropped by. Local designers Teacup Treasures and Triple Kiss Designs displayed their wares and a local scout manned a second hand book stall.
Thanks to Carol Wright and Gabriella Fuzi for information and photographs. See also the Community Garden web site and blog.
The events were supported by Platinum Jubilee community grants from Cambridge City Council.
