1911 is the first census where individual household schedules have been published, rather than pages from the enumerators’ books. This presents particular challenges when transcribing, as the handwriting changes from schedule to schedule, often making it harder to read. There is no consistency between different householders’ interpretation of the instructions; information is sometimes incomplete or incorrectly entered.
Addresses are presented in three different ways: the householder’s own version, the “official” address according to the enumerator, and that recorded in the enumerator’s list of schedules. These are often at variance with each other. We have, in general, used the address presented by the householder, only resorting to one of the others if that address lacks detail (for instance, simply “Trumpington”).
For the first time information about the history of the marriage of each married woman is included. Four new columns appear: “Completed years the present Marriage has lasted”, “Total Children Born Alive” to the present marriage, “Children still Living”, and “Children who have Died”. These were often filled in against the husband rather than the wife, in which case (for consistency) we have transcribed them against the wife’s name. Widows were not supposed to enter this information, but they frequently did, in which case the numbers have usually been scored through in red. In these cases we have transcribed the original figures, which will be of interest to some researchers.
The only roads to be consistently given house numbers are Alpha Terrace and North Cottages.
