Guided Walk from Hobson Square to Long Road and the High Street, 5 June 2025

Andrew Roberts led a group from Hobson Square through the Clay Farm development to Long Road and back along the High Street and Alpha Terrace. Unlike the similar walk led by Howard Slatter in June 2024, we were fortunate to have a dry evening.

We covered:

  • Hobson Square and Clay Farm Centre, including the development of the Square and the Centre, archaeology and the Bronze House artwork;
  • along Poulter Walk and Hering Road to Hobson’s Park, including farming, the park, railway and Busway, Hobson’s Brook and Conduit;
  • on to the Lime Avenue spine road past Trumpington Community College;
  • archaeology of the Green Lane and Lime Avenue area, including Bronze Age finds and evidence of a World War 2 searchlight battery;
  • walk through the northern part of Clay Farm including Forbes Close, Seekings Close, Northrop Road and Willers Lane;
  • view to Clay Farm House;
  • on to Long Road, with reference to the local area, including the railway bridges, 1922 Royal Show and Trinity Dairy Farm;
  • past Mill Cottages and the site of the windmill;
  • a brief diversion along Trumpington Road to the location of the Volunteer public house;
  • the return along the High Street, past Gilmerton Court and the milestone to Alpha Terrace;
  • the site of the saw mill and interesting houses along the Terrace, to Fawcett School;
  • back into the Clay Farm development for a final archaeology stop, at the site of a Romano-British cremation burial;
  • Stacey Road and Henty Close and back to Hobson Square.
